Facilitate Opportunities for Underprivileged Kids to Experience Dance

There are studies and news reports that our youth are more obese than they have ever been.  I believe that dancing and physical fitness are important for everyone.  While there is a lot of talk about changing the foods in the schools to help fight obesity, I believe that exercise is just as important.

Childhood obesity has tripled over the past 30 years in the United States. This disease is very troubling because it puts these children in danger of diseases that used to mostly onset later in life, such as diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol.  This can also lead to poor self-esteem and depression.  Children are young and vulnerable.

Dance can really benefit children’s health, emotional and mental levels.  It involves a greater range of motion, strength and endurance than some of the other physical activities. Dancing utilizes the entire body and is an excellent form of exercise for total body fitness and enhancing overall well-being. It can create better self esteem through encouragement and accomplishment.

Dance can be an expensive sport to participate in full time.  Although my parents have found a way to provide the necessary means for me to dance, there are a lot of other kids that do not have the opportunity to experience this fun form of exercise that I believe is important.

I believe that winning the title of Miss Teen North Texas will help open doors at places like low income, after school facilities and Boys and Girls Club of America where I would be able to teach basic dance steps to kids of all ages in a fun and energetic way. This is also a good way to give back to the communities that we live in.
